sail cover

Hi....I'm thinking about making a sail cover for the main sail so that we can leave the sail on the boom and a majority of the slugs in the mast slot. Has anyone ever made one themselves? If so, what were the dimensions of the cover?

with the sail lowered and bundled onto the mast, take a tape measure and wrap it around the sail at the aft end, then at the 3 regular intervals forward finishing with the circumfrance at the mast. Add a couple of inches to all your measurements and cut your cloth from sunbrella fabric. The baseline is flat. Measure up from this and cut your cloth accordingly. Assume about 14" inches of cloth for the main body and about 18-24 inches at the mast.

Won't water feed down the mast and onto the sail? Would that cause damage to the sail??

there will be some sail bundled near the mast. The top collar of the sail cover that wraps around the mast should have an adjuster that allows it to tighten around the mast above the sail to prevent most water from trickling down.
