Where to get Jib Car parts

Postby rwreutti » Sun Mar 28, 2010 9:40 am

I have an 1983 DS II and the port jib car pin rusted and was not releasable. When I tried to free it up the screw broke. I am looking for the car alone. Does anyone have any ideas on where to get one? D&R sells the entire system for $175.00 I would like to just get the car if possible.
Thanks fo rthe help.

Not sure if this will work for you ?

Problem is that many of the DS boats don't share standard hardware. If the one above doesn't work I would call D@R and ask if they know where you could get one.

I may have one if you could post a pic to compare. Brad

Thanks for the reply!!

I checked and this is not the car I have. Mine does not have a loop but instead has two channels for the base of the eye and jam cleat to attach to the car. I will try to get a picture over the next few days and post it.

D&R seemed to have only replacement systems. However, great Iidea to give them a call.

Thanks for the help!![img][/img]

I'll check through some spare parts I have accumulated. If I have one like you need I’ll be glad to send it to you.

Something else to consider is using a basic car and putting your attachments on it. Brad

I tried to replace my cars, and came up with nothing. Rudy at D&R even looked in this warehouse for used parts.

The jib tracks on Day Sailers are actually sail track stock. They are smaller than the 3/4" T-track that is usually used. If you go to Defender.com or Rigrite.com, you can find a sail track slide with eyestrap for $40-45. Then you have to purchase a separate track stop for about the same price. (That's right--about $180 for parts, because you need two of everything.)

Another option would be to convert to standard 3/4" Schaefer T-track with a standard car. That would be cheaper and more effective, but the holes on the T-track won't line up with the old sail-track holes, so you'll have to repair the hull liner. Depending on the condition of the wood backing inside the hull, the whole job might involve installing an inspection port aft of the track so that you can install new or additional backing plates.

FYI, I ended up cutting the old 1973 Schaefer blocks off of my cars, and used swaged steel cable to attach new Harken ratchet blocks (a shackle wouldn't fit). I already have buyer's remorse. With the new high-strength lines like Dyneema and Vectra, I probably could have just tied the blocks to the cars. Oh, well. Next winter.

My 1974 DS II has the cam cleats on the top of the keel trunk. I have been thinking about replacing the jib cars with something more friendly to single handing the boat. While parting out the old Hobie 16 I thought the Hobie old style Hobie jib cars might work on the DS. The Hobie uses a stand up block with an attached cam cleat. I think it would work but the Hobie track would also need to be used. The earlier Hobie jib cars are easy to find as the Hobie sailors typically upgrade to a lower profile car. If you are replacing the track, look for some Hobie 16 cars.
Take care,
