more mainsail flotation

I finished making my mainsail flotation device today, now I wait till the ice melts, and maybe a little longer, to test it. Here's some pics...

The foam: 16 pounds of bouyancy, 2" thick each side.


The nylon ripstop tube, with abrasion resistance and access to foam.


Mounted on the head of the mainsail.

Very nice work Jay. It is a little to early to test it assuming you will probably be laying your boat over on its side to do it. Is that a sail slug sewn on in the last photo ? Brad

Nice design and professionally executed. Seems like your next step is to think of a catchy name for it, then commission a Chinese sail loft to make them for you and start selling them on eBay. You'll make a fortune!

Gooorsh, thanks guys.

Brad, the mainsail slide is still attached to the mainsail but the vinyl has a slit to capture the slide and keep the flotation at the head of the mainsail. It takes less then a minute to attach to the mainsail or you can leave it attached. I hope to test it fairly soon, as I have a drysuit and much layers of fleece. However, the snow drift has only melted down to the gunwales at this point.

K.C., from your mouth (ummm fingerstips) to God's ear. But, first I'd like to check and see if it makes a 'stick in the mud' outa my mast, or not. How about calling it Jay's Wet Dream. Actually, I kinda like that for a boat name!
