Alternative non-class sails for cruising and messing about

Has anyone experimented with full batten mains, perhaps with a bit of roach? Other designs for just messing about?

There's a picture in one of the recent posts showing a boat with what looks at first glance a full batten main sail. However, a closer look reveals that the sails have colored seams but standard battens.

The seams would make it easier to see the shape of the sail which helps in trimming.

Instead of changing the main, it seems more common to go for a larger headsail. See the discussion of the UPS.
