Another Motor Question

I am the new proud owner of a 77 Daysailer II. However, I am sailing in the waters of Pensacola, FL, and need some sort of auxiliary power to fight current and tides.

My question is: I found a 7.5 hp 2 stroke, short shaft, air cooled engine that weighs less than 50 lbs. Would this work? Is it too heavy to be on the transom. I read in the manual 8hp Long shaft. I figured if it was light enough, then it would work.

Any advice or others using a motor of this type and horsepower?

It should do well. It it is a bit heavy and definitely has more power than you may need under most conditions. If possible I would add a larger and thicker backing plate on the motor bracket mount. If you can't get to the inside of the stern very easily you could add it to the outside. Does this engine have an internal or external fuel tank ? Brad

I did go ahead and purchased the motor. It is a Sears 7.5 hp Gamefisher. I'd say it weighs about 35-40 lbs, it isn't too heavy. I rigged the boat tonight with the motor on the back and it gets in the way of the mainsheet traveler, or whatever it is called. However, I think I can get by with this tomorrow, if it is too much of a nuisance back there then we will take it off and put it in the cuddy.

I'll post some pictures and order a motor mount.
